Some book challenge updates.

  • Concern about the age-appropriateness of Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye has prompted a Connecticut school district to re-evaluate their policies on controversial materials. (You may remember that this is the challenge in which most of the Talking Heads are, hilariously, running for local office. BUT THE TWO THINGS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ONE ANOTHER, EVEN THOUGH THE LOCAL OFFICE THEY'RE RUNNING FOR? IS A SEAT ON THE SCHOOL BOARD. La la la la la. One of the challengers—who is, incidentally, one of the same folks running for the school board—doesn't have any children in the district. And hadn't read the book when she first brought it up. And, judging by the phrasing in the article, still hasn't read it.)
  • It's likely that Part-time Indian will stay in the 8th-grade curriculum at Old Rochester Regional. Kira-Kira will be the choice for students who decide to opt-out. (Previously.)
  • Controversy over the use of John Berger's To The Wedding in a California high school has led to a discussion about the difference between 'mature' and 'vulgar'.
