The Charmed Reboot: Pilot.
I’ll keep this short, because everything I have to say about this pilot episode boils down to not very clever plays—if you can even call them plays—on the title.
I AM CHARMED BY CHARMED.
CHARMED IS CHARMING.
SECOND TIME IS THE CHARM… ed.
It’s funny and campy and warm and the characters live in our world and if their whitelighter has to be a white dude, at least the show directly addresses that.
ALSO, I really enjoyed that one of the sisters comes from the Fun Police mold, not only because I identify Rather Strongly with that, but because that character type is usually written as a punchline/source of eyerolls, and this time, she’s written as a person. A person who knows that people think she’s a strident harpy—and who has complex feelings about that—but is determined to work at making the world a better place ANYWAY.
For a more detailed breakdown of some of the delights herein, see this Twitter thread—the author hits on a bunch of the specific moments that made me smirk, smile, or laugh out loud.
If you’ve got recommendations for similar shows, let me know—after I finished this, I started re-watching Lost Girl, which will hold me for a while, but I’m going to need more, more, more.
