Controversy over The Color Purple is dealt with rationally.

From AccessNorthGa.com:

After parent complaints that books like "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker are too explicit for schoolchildren, the McIntosh Board of Education agreed Thursday to expand its summer reading requirements to allow students to opt out of books their parents find objectionable.

They've expanded the list from four to twelve books.  I must admit, four books does seem like a pretty short list to me, especially if you have to read two of them.  But I was probably spoiled, because the list at my high school was about twelve pages long.

But, of course, the people weren't really complaining about lack of choice.  They were complaining about the devil:

"It's just another way for the good old devil trying to get in, and it's not happening in my book," said McIntosh County Academy parent Maria Shead.
